Stiles’ Reviews | I am Setsuna

So, who here has heard of Tokyo RPG Factory.? No One? Well how about Square Enix? There we go. What self-respecting JRPG fan hasn’t heard of the juggernaut. The two companies that merged to form this behemoth of a corporation were not only the creators of the JRPG genre back on the NES with Dragon Quest/Warrior, but also the reigning kings of the genre for over a decade.

Well time has passed, and with it things change. The ‘Golden Era’ of Console JRPGs drew to a close many a year ago, and Square Enix too, turned their back on the very genre that was their bread and butter for so long. Long time fans of the genre plead for a return to form while Square Enix continued to put out title after title that seemed to mock the core values of their earlier hits; At least, that was the case, until they formed the small development team, Tokyo RPG Factory, to create a title reminiscent of those that long time fans had been clamoring for. See? I had a plan with that intro all along.

Enter, I Am Setsuna, the self-proclaimed throwback JRPG that uses Chrono Trigger as it’s base and Sadness as it’s theme. In this title you play as the mercenary Endir, whom is tasked with protecting ‘The Sacrifice’ (Setsuna) during her long journey to her final resting place. She will surely need said protection, as her long trek will have her facing deadly adversaries, traveling through perilous dungeons and slogging through miles upon miles of unbroken snow.

The real question however isn’t whether or not Setsuna will survive her pilgrimage, but whether or not Tokyo RPG Factory truly succeeded at capturing the spirit and charm of the Golden Era games that it is attempting to emulate. Check out the video for yourself and see what I thought of I Am Setsuna.

Pokemon Sun & Moon – In Depth Look

Twenty years ago, Pokémon took the gaming industry by storm. The idea was born of Satoshi Tajiri’s childhood hobby of collecting insects and tadpoles. Combining his collection hobby with ideas from the Ultra Seven TV series, his ideas would form into what was then known as Capsule Monsters. Nintendo actually shot his pitch down several times, until Shigeru Miyamoto stepped in and saved the day. Due to trademarks held by other companies, Capsule Monsters would become Pocket Monsters. Little did they know that the brand would become nearly as synonymous with Nintendo as the Mario brothers.

It’s almost hard to believe that with each new generation of core games, Nintendo continually improves an already amazing game experience. New gameplay mechanics, new battle types, updated graphics, the games get better with every core release. This article will provide an in-depth look at the latest releases of the core series, Pokémon Sun & Pokémon Moon.

Gameplay

One of the biggest changes in the 7th generation is the new Ride Pokémon system. Gone are the days of lugging around an HM slave (I’m looking at you Bibarel) to simply navigate through the game’s landscape. Hidden Machines have been eliminated altogether in favor of this new system. The Ride Pager is mapped to the Y button when not in battle, and you can even individually map Ride Pokémon to all four directions on the D-Pad. More Ride Pokémon become available as the player progresses further into the game.

There are also a few new features when fighting Pokémon in the wild. Pokéballs are now mapped to the Y button when in battle, making navigating item menus looking for the right ball for the situation a thing of the past. Once you reach a certain milestone in the game wild Pokémon are given the ability to call for help. This does not take the opponent’s turn. The Pokémon summoned are usually directly related to the one you’re currently battling, but there are exceptions. This system can be used to catch evolved forms of the current Pokémon and can even be used to farm shiny variants of the current Pokémon! Also now when you catch a Pokémon you are given several options. You can view the summary of the Pokémon you just caught, view the summary of your party, and you can even swap the new Pokémon for one that is currently in your party! This is a MAJOR game changer. Now when you catch that Legendary ‘mon you’ve been after, you don’t have to find the quickest way back to town to pull it out of a box! The game also implements a new “Care” system so you can treat status effects without items after battle and make Pokémon grow friendlier. This option is also available from the menu screen.

Another new battle feature makes its first appearance. When battling wild Pokémon or Trainers, move effectiveness will be displayed next to the move name. Note that you must have encountered the particular Pokémon at least once to soft-register to your Pokédex before this will show up, but it certainly cuts down on memorization of Pokémon types and weaknesses. With over 800 Pokémon to choose from, this tiny change makes a huge difference!

moveeffectiveness
Move effectiveness is now displayed during battles

The Gym system of previous titles has been abandoned in favor of the new Kahuna system. This change is story-related, but I’m trying my best to leave spoilers out, so you’ll have to play to find out. Basically, the way this new system works is that you must face a varying number of captains on each island before earning the right to face the islands Kahuna. Since we no longer need badges to use HM moves, this change only seems fitting.

Some side elements of the game have been tweaked as well. Fishing is still an option, but fishing areas have become more restricted. Instead of fishing in any body of water, the option is only available when the player is near underwater rock circles. Berry planting is no longer available, but berry piles spawn at the base of trees. These piles provide a variety of berries and have a chance of spawning a Pokémon to battle. While neither feature was pertinent to the game, I will miss the option to grow fields of Leppa berries.

Perhaps the biggest change to the game’s battle system is the introduction of Z-Moves.
Z-Moves are upgraded forms of standard Pokémon attacks, and depending on the move type can either cause additional damage or change the move altogether. Splash, for instance, has been a move that does absolutely nothing in previous games, now raises Attack 3 stages when infused with Z-Power. The moves also cause damage against Pokémon using moves like Protect, but only cause 25% of regular damage. These new attacks add a new level of strategy to competitive play.

New Pokémon

With every new generation of core games, a plethora of new Pokémon are available to be caught. Sun and Moon adds a total of 81 new Pokémon to the National Pokédex, from the adorable Rockruff, to the fearsome-looking Golisopod. One of the more notable Pokémon of this generation is Mimikyu with its unique Ghost/Fairy typing. With new Pokémon , also comes new moves and abilities to shake up Pokémon battles.

768Golisopod_Dream.png
Golisopod. Very scary.

Along with the new Pokémon this generation has also introduced regional variants of classic Pokémon. These Pokémon are dubbed “Alolan” representing the new region the games takes place in. Alolan Pokémon possess different typing than their standard counterparts. One of the more talked about Alolan forms was Exeggutor’s new form changing it standard typing of Grass/Psychic to Grass/Dragon. These new forms also change the appearance of the creatures significantly, adding an innovative twist to Pokémon from the first generation.

YOU’VE BEEN WARNED!!

Since Generation 1 the Pokémon games have offered additional content after becoming the Pokémon League Champion. Sun and Moon are no different. There are a variety of things to do once you complete your Pokémon adventure. During the story, an event takes place that opens up dimensional wormholes, leading to the release of the Ultra Beasts, or UBs. It is never really said whether or not the UBs are Pokémon or not, but they are amazingly powerful creatures. Once you’ve beaten the Elite Four, your old pal from previous games, Looker, shows up in Alola accompanied by his boss Anabel. They provide you with the locations that the UBs have been spotted and task you with capturing them (You have to catch them, otherwise they will respawn). You are given special Pokéballs developed by the Aether Foundation that were specifically designed to catch these beasts. Once you’ve collected them all, a the new Legendary Pokémon, Necrozma, becomes available to capture.

In addition to the Ultra Beasts, the Tapu Pokémon of each island are available to fight and capture. These are the guardian Pokémon of their respective islands so be ready for a fight. They include Tapu Koko, Tapu Lele, Tapu Bulu, and Tapu Fini. These Pokémon spawn in the ruins areas of their respective islands, except for Tapu Koko, whom is immediately battled after completing the game.

Players are also given the opportunity to catch another of their games signature legendary (Solgaleo and Lunala) in its base form, Cosmog. To find it, simply return to the Altar of the Sunne (or Moone) and enter the portal to another world. From there Simply travel to the Lake of the Sunne/Moone and Cosmog will ask to join your party.

Gladion can be visited in 2F of Aether Foundation. He will be reflecting on the games events, and eventually hand over the unique Pokémon, Type:Null, and the items to change its evolved form Silvally into different types.

typenull.png
Type: Null. A Pokémon genectically engineered for battle.

The Battle Tree is a really fun addition to the game. It allows the player to battle until they no longer can. Players are rewarded with Battle Points based on their win streak to spend on items.Expect some familiar faces from previous games to show up for battle!

Challenging the Elite Four again also comes with some new surprises. Not only are their Pokemon more powerful, but additional trainers will show up randomly and try to take the title of Pokémon League Champion from you!

Well that wraps up my in-depth look at Pokémon Sun/Moon. In my opinion this may be the greatest Pokémon game to date. With new mechanics, simplified controls, and a slew of new Pokémon this game is a great way to break into the series if you’ve never played, and veterans will enjoy exploring the new land of Alola. Now get out there and catch ’em all!!

Wallet Crusader: Dead Space

Dead Space is a science fiction game that served as the grounds for the survival horror series that developed after over the years. We follow space engineer Isaac Clarke as he and the rescue crew of the USG Kellion are sent to a distress call from a planet cracking starship called the USG Ishimura. What was intended to be a rescue mission quickly ended up being a fight for survival against waves of mutilated creatures called Necromorphs. Will Isaac be able to stop this infestation before it engulfs humanity?

dead_space_box_artDead Space

Systems (s): PS3, Xbox 360 & PC

Developer: EA Redwood Shores (now Visceral Games)

Publisher: Electronic Arts

Release Date: October 12, 2008

Price: $9-12 (Steam $20)

The Gameplay:

Dead Space is a third-person shooter that feeds off jump scares and exploits the Player being overwhelmed while following Isaac Clarke’s fight on the mining starship. Fueling the Player’s  paranoia within the depths of survival horror, little to no breaks for recomposure are given throughout story’s progression. Throughout 12 chapters the Player accesses different parts of the USG Ishimura via  tram,  completing varying objectives and fighting.against relentless hordes of Necromoprhs. These reanimated monstrous creatures are the result of an extraterrestrial contagion that is spread when pathogens transfer and recombinant within the corpses they leave behind.

dead-space-screenshot_1280-0-0

As the game progresses the Player will encounter several different types of Necromorph, each exhibiting different abilities and requiring different tactics and methods of execution. Using the different vents and other parts of the ships these creatures will hide in the dark and violently attack anyone that isn’t infected. The combat will generally be aimed towards dismembering the Necromorphs strategically, first by taking their legs out and then the arms. Shooting their head off will not stop these creatures from mauling the Player to death

Outside of the different stores places around the USG Ishimura, the Player will be left scavenging for items and ammunition  left around the ship or dropped by Necromorphs. Isaac will find various weapons created from improvised mining equipment and every weapons encountered can be upgraded as well as features a secondary-fire mode. Blueprints for suit upgrades, ammunition and other items of importance will be hidden throughout the level designs, becoming available for purchases upon redeeming within the store.

Screenshot (449).png

Breaking away from normal HUD experienced within games over the years, the Player operates a holographic projection during real-time within the game. This will not only act as an Inventory grid but offers a 3D map, the game’s archive and shows current objectives, but the Player is ultimately exposed to elements of the game while in menu.

The Player’s health is  indicated by a Rig on Isaac’s back while the ammo count for weapons are holograms that appear by the sights of the weapon. (At anytime the Player can press R3 and a Marker indicating the correct path will appear.) Isaac will also discover two special weapons that will be used to solve puzzles as well as aid in his survival aboard the USG Ishimura: the Stasis ability and a Kinesis module. The Stasis ability will allow Isaac to slow down enemies or different mechanics on the ship, utilizing this mid combat can be beneficial to the Player. The Kinesis module will move items and also throw them, heavy and sharp objects become deadly weapons on the fly when ammunition is scarce.Power Nodes are hidden around the ship as well and can be used at Workbenches, which upgrade Isaac’s suit and weapons.

Different environments within the ship range from zero gravity to toxic environments and Isaac is kept safe with a limited air supply. Learning the level designs and different hazardous elements of the game is essential for survival.

usg_ishimura_full_profile

The Single Player:

En route to the starship, the USG Kellion experiences guidance system issues and crashes, leaving the crew aboard an empty ship. During some brief exploration the group is attacked by Necromorphs and most of them are dismembered and killed. Isaac, commander Zach Hammond and Computer Specialist Kendra Daniels, the surviving crew, are then left to keep the USG Ishimura’s systems from failing long enough to be rescued. During Isaac’s journey repairing the ship and fighting for survival he uncovers the truth about Aegis VII and the Red Marker and perhaps an end to the Necromorph infestation. The question is will he be able to survive long enough to end it though?

Final Thoughts: 85%

Dead Space is an epitome of survival horror which was sadly bastardized as the series continued. Capitalizing off jump scares, a grim atmosphere and strategic gaming in order to survive, this title holds no bars when it comes to punishing the Player for making wrong decisions. The story that unfolds is well written and further compliments the gameplay of the game itself. Although enemy waves become predictable at times and some of the level designs recycled, the overall dreadful feeling rarely lifts. This game goes deep into the realms of distrubing and gruesome fantasies, showing mutlations, dismemberments and carnage with close attention to details.

deadspace1.jpg

Pros –

  • The mini games were fun additions
  • Enemy design and how they vary in abilities
  • The brutal nature and unforgiving manner makes this a fun and invigorating playthrough
  • Fun and challenging boss battles
  • Tons of different ways to die

Cons –

  • Repetition within level design
  • Glitches and bugs within combat, zero gravity and Kinesis.
  • If the Player strays away from vents and other openings, many of the enemies patterns become easy to memorize.

Indie Game Spotlight: King of Dragon Pass

Are you looking for a fun, casual experience to enjoy during your free time? Do you enjoy playing games on your phone but hate being bothered by in-game purchases? If you answered “yes” to either question, look no further because King of Dragon Pass may be the game you’ve been searching for. Originally released in 1999, the magic of KoDP was reawakened in 2011 on IOS, then again in 2012 on GOG.com, and finally in 2014 on Android and Windows Phone. Having been readily accessible for a few years now, I’m surprised not to hear about more gamers obsessing over it. Hopefully, this review will inspire those who may have skipped past such a timeless classic to delve into this mystical land full of barbarians, strange customs, and (of course) dragons!

The Gameplay:

King of Dragon Pass isn’t a traditional fantasy roleplaying game. Rather than leveling up warriors and dungeon crawling, KoDP puts the player in control of a barbarian clan. The main focus of this game is to survive the trials and tribulations that these clans encounter by managing their resources and making vital decisions. These decisions will often have dire consequences and are presented in a similar fashion to those “choose your own adventure” style books, which were a favorite of mine as a child. Luckily, the player isn’t completely alone when choosing their path. The player may also consult “the circle” (a council of chosen clan representatives) to offer advice on each scenario. Be careful, however. Not all advice is good advice.

iphone1.png

In the beginning, you will be presented with a series of multiple choice questions. Your answers will define what your tribe values most and which gods their ancestors traditionally worshiped. One of the most important questions deals with whether your clan tends to be peaceful, warlike, or balanced. Another thing to consider is whether or not your tribe traditionally owns “thralls”, which are essentially slaves. These decisions will also affect other tribes’ dispositions toward your people. Choosing to worship certain gods or ancestor spirits will grant you a starter temple dedicated to them. These answers only define the tribes’ history, so their future is up to the player.

king-of-dragon-pass-review-screenshot-1-1024x640

The most interesting aspect of KoDP was it’s fantasy lore and quirky situations. For instance, one question in the intro has the player choose an ancient adversary. This ancient enemy can be anything from trolls to savage beastmen. Some of these enemies can automatically destroy your clan if angered too much. If the player decides to be too friendly with their ancient foes, they will anger their ancestor spirits and diminish their clan magic. Another example of lies within the storytelling portion of the game. You will have to choose how to settle disputes between enemies, strange foreigners, and even within your own clan. Some of these situations are cultural or religious disagreements and others can be outright silly. A mystic dragonkin may show up to your gates unannounced with an unknown agenda. A female in your clan might get pregnant by a man in another clan. Explorers might stumble upon strange relics or creatures. In each of these situations, the player is granted the ability to choose how the clan with deal with each problem. The wrong decision might result in a huge disaster, while good decisions might grant you awesome perks like dinosaur mounts! There isn’t always a set formula either, so there’s an element of luck involved. This makes each game a unique experience and all events are recorded so that you can read the story of your clan once the game is finished (or anytime during the game to review the timeline of events.)

10-capture_011_01102012_114027

Gameplay in KoDP mostly consists of navigating different tabs and controlling different aspects of the economy. The game is broken down into five seasons and the player is limited to two actions per season. Some available actions include choosing how many livestock to butcher, who to raid, which sacrifices should be made to the many gods, which temples to build, and many others. Choosing the wrong actions during the wrong seasons can have serious consequences, such as planning raids during farming seasons or exploring or traveling during the winter. Regardless of whether you focus on war or peace, your clan will be forced to choose how to deal with those who threaten their lands and how to assure all of their people are being fed and are content.

us-ipad-5-king-of-dragon-pass

Warfare in KoDP is kind of like playing rock, paper, scissors at times. You choose your objectives and tactics while attacking or defending at the beginning of a battle. You can also choose to invest magic or make sacrifices to the gods, which can increase the odds of success. The battles are auto-calculated and the results may vary. Sometimes during battle, an event will take place where you can choose different maneuvers for your general to perform. The leading general will generally (pun intended) be the best fighter in the circle. Having a smaller force does put the player at a disadvantage, but play your cards right and you might even repel a larger force without losing a single man!

3-ironplow007

The rule of law is not only determined by tradition but also the circle. The circle are the selected few who are chosen to represent the interests of your clansmen. A full circle includes seven members. The game automatically assigns the circle to begin with, but the player can remove and add new members at their leisure. Each member worships their own god and they are rated by skill in different areas such as combat, leadership, and magic. These people also age over time, so it’s important to plan to replace the elderly members. It is important to have a diverse group of talents and worshipers of different gods to make sure everyone in the tribe is equally representative.  The circle also comes in handy when making tough decisions. They will remind the player of obligations and give advice on how to deal with any situation. Some circle members are more inclined to enter combat, whereas others might be more concerned with custom or righteousness. These pieces of advice often conflict so make sure to review each members’ ideas before relying on just one person’s advice.

aeca968a720d48a021c498b235fdb0e57caf9cd4

During my last playthrough, I decided to be a war-focused clan who spent most seasons raiding and capturing slaves. Most of the slaves were kept as a cheap labor source, but in order to keep them from growing too large and revolting, I sacrificed many of them to evil gods. By sacrificing to these gods, I was able to strengthen my armies, send infectious plagues upon my foes, and even destroy their crop harvests. These sacrifices weren’t purely beneficial, however. Often the evil gods would demand that I increase my offerings to them or ignore my sacrifices completely. This play style also made it pretty hard to keep and friends, and that leads me to the most important part of the game: becoming king!

10-fedarkosisnotdead012

In order to become king of all Dragon Pass, it is essential to forge friendships and bonds with other clans. The first step is achieving glory for your clan through either going on quests for the gods, strength in battle or even acts of charity and fairness to other clans. Once you’ve made a name for yourself, then next step is forming alliances and tribes. An alliance is basically just a pact of goodwill between clans. To create a tribe you must rally a group of clans together under a single leader. This is much easier said than done. The many clans throughout the land are so vastly different that it is often hard to find a middle ground between them. Enemy clans will also form tribes that can wage large-scale attacks against the player’s clan or tribe. The goal is to unite all of the tribes under a single banner and become the King of all Dragon Pass.

kodp6

Final Judgment: 97%

It’s hard for me to rate a game like this because I know it suits all gamers. Despite the rather bland set of menus that make up a bulk of the gameplay, King of Dragon Pass is an unforgettable experience that most fantasy and simulation gamers should enjoy. Especially being available on IOS, there is very little reason not to invest in a game as wonderful as this. The biggest (only?) drawback for me was the randomness of it all. Luckily, that is just another part of this game that makes it special. No two games will ever play out the same way, even if the same choices are made each time. Reading the chronicles of your tribe’s history after playing is also a very neat feature. The setting is excellent and the storytelling is exceptional. At times I was frustrated, confused, and outraged, but that just made each victory that much sweeter.

Pros:
